Malcolm McMahon from University of Edinburgh examines melting and elastic properties of Fe, Fe-Si alloys.
The very special DiPOLE laser at the instrument HED (High Energy Density) at the European XFEL, with its unprecedented repetition rate and exquisite pulse control combined with HED’s large detectors enables the team to make diffraction studies of solid and liquid phases at extreme conditions concerning pressure and temperature that are not possible elsewhere. The outcomes of this research will provide transformative new information on these fundamental materials, while the techniques the international collaboration is developing will form the foundations for a lot of similar research for the next decade.
