Abstract:
'The NEMESIS experiment (New Emma MEasurement with neutronS In cosmic Showers) rn is located in Pyhasalmi Mine (Finland), and operates at a depth of 75u202fm (210u202fm.w.e.), rn corresponding to 50u202fGeV cutoff energy for vertical muons.rn rn The experiment consists of a pixelized (11cm x 11cm) scintillationrn telescope, 14 helium counters, 2 1m^2 scintillating detectors,rn and Pb target. The scintillation telescope detect the cosmic ray muonsrn passing through the Pb-target, while the helium counters detect thern neutrons produced in Pb. The aim of the experiment is to preciselyrn investigate production of neutrons and check whether it is well describedrn by simulations. This is important for experiments which look for rarern phenomenas, as the detector shelters are often made of lead.rnrn Detector was measuring for one year. One of the parameter isrn neutron yield per muon. Preliminary analysis of our datarn show the yield equal to 4.5 (+/- 0.5) e-4 per square centimeterrn per gram or the mean for muon energy = 50 GeV. This result is similarrn to yields reported in the literature.rnrn This work was financially supported by the EU (INTERREG for Baltic Searn program) as part of the BSUIN project, and by the Polish Ministryrn of Science and Higher Education (grant no. 3988/INTERREG BSR/2018/2).'
