Using the DIPOLE 100-X high-power laser at the European XFEL's HED-HIBEF, an international research collaboration led by the University of Rostock and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) has succeeded in studying liquid carbon in detail for the first time.The unique combination of the European XFEL with the high-performance laser DIPOLE100-X was crucial for the success of the experiment that ushers in a new era of measuring matter under high pressure.
