The team led by Camila Bacellar from the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland is investigating the haemprotein cytochrome c at the SCS experiment station of the European XFEL. Among other things, this protein plays an important role in electron transport in mitochondria. Mitochondria are regarded as the "power stations" in the cells of organisms. The team is particularly interested in the long-discussed question of how exactly the chemical state of the iron contained in cytochrome c plays a role in its structure and function. In order to clearly measure this ultra-fast process, they use X-ray near-edge absorption spectroscopy with the polarised X-ray light of the European XFEL.
