Precise investigation of the photoinduced cleavage of cobalt-containing cyanide ligands

Cyanide ligands are very stable compounds of hydrocyanic acid with metals. These (non-toxic) compounds are often used in the manufacture of pigments and are employed in electrolysis and medical diagnostics. Using a combination of ultrafast, inelastic X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy, Vinicius Vaz da Cruz from the Helmholtz Centre Berlin for Materials and Energy (HZB) and and Alexander Foehlisch from University of Potsdam are investigating the photoinduced cleavage of cyanide ligands in a solvent/water cage at the SCS instrument of European XFEL. They are comparing the processes of cobalt-containing cyanide ligands with those of iron-containing cyanide ligands, as there are indications that the dynamics differ much in both cases.
